This is a fabulous bass! The instrument has always been know as an early 1800’s bass from Naples Italy since at least the 1960’s. The bass has been played in major orchestras for the last three owners as a top end Italian gem. We completed a dendrochronology a month ago which put the bass with a manufacture date as circa 1885. Dates this late puts it in the German commercial wood trade. All the European countries had access to excellent cheaper wood that could be easily delivered anywhere. Alpine lumber from this era was used in Italy, Germany, France and even England. Basses with overlapping traits from different countries are very hard to pinpoint an exact origin. Examples from all these countries pop up on the denro report. This makes this bass an amazing deal with the looks, traits and playability equal to the best positively attributed Italian basses.
